Updates

Posted in Uncategorized on February 14, 2010 by Jay

Finally got around to tweaking the right side menu.

The top is my Gun Fund. I’m saving my change (literally, in a Mason jar) and any money I get from a side job to purchase my next gun, which will 99% likely be a Makarov, or a Sig P238, or a Sig P6, or a Walther P-1/P-38, or a Walther PPK in .380, or a Swiss K31, or a Russian 91/30 Mosin Nagant, or hmmmmm. I think I need to decide first. Man, being a gun nut is expensive.

Next is the Blogroll, which is people I read every day. I’ve got a second category to blogroll created, Bloggers I’ve Met, but because I haven’t met anyone (hopefully fixed soon), it is empty and doesn’t show up.

Third is the Blog Stats, which updates every 60 seconds. So far, I’ve received 5,247 hits, which is absolutely amazing to me, considering most people I know consider me a 21-year-old kid.

Next is the Calender, which shows the days on which I’ve posted.

Fifth is the Archives, by month. They aren’t super long, since I’ve only been blogging for 7 months or so.

Lastly is the Categories. Click on a category, and every blog that was put in that category shows up. Be warned though, it’s hopelessly messed up since I’ve just started actually using Categories.

Stuff I still need to do:

  • Go back and update earlier blogs with Categories
  • Get a picture for my banner
  • Ponder why I don’t own anything in 9mm or .45

Deals – 02/12/2010

Posted in Deals on February 12, 2010 by Jay

Since I got a few emails in response to my first real “Deals” article (read one email from one of my 4 readers), here is a continuation.

Bulgarian Makarov in 9×18 – comes with 2 mags and a holster for $269.95. Need I say more? One of the most popular CCWs I know of. I’m actually going to create a fund to save my pennies to get one, I want one that bad.

Glock 23 in .40 S&W – comes with 1 LE marked 13 round mag for $379.95. I’ve got one and love it. Great balance between concealment and accuracy/distance, yet still fun to shoot.

Sig Sauer P6 in 9mm Luger – comes with 1 8 round mag for $349.95. The P6 is the German Police version of the P225. Dad’s got one and let’s just say, I’m jealous. Super duper thin, which is nice for a CCW. It has a metal frame and slide, so it’s a little on the heavy side, but I’m sure it’ll still conceal nicely. I want one eventually.

If you have something you would like to see in “Deals”, like rifles, shotguns, ammunition, Off paper black market fully automatic destructive devices (threw that one in there to give the BATFE agents reading my blog a heart attack), magazines, etc feel free to leave a comment or shoot me an email.

Quick add

Something else I need to mention…

The Wally World I went to interview at was pretty much stocked on all major handgun calibers (.25, .32, 9mm, .357 sig, .40) except for .45 ACP and .380 auto. They only had 3 50 count boxes of WWB in .40 S&W, but they were loaded for 9mm, in both WWB and Remington for value packs and 50 round boxes. They also had tons of revolver ammo (.357 magnum, .38 spl, .38 spl+p, and .44 magnum) at what seemed like great prices (I don’t own a revolver, meaning I’m not hip on revolver ammo pricing).

Also just as interesting, they got rid of the locked display case that the ammo normally sits in. Seriously. The ammo was just sitting open on a shelf behind the sporting goods counter. Instead of having to wait for Jenny to call Keith a billion times and wait a lifetime and a half so she can get the keys to open the locked display case to sell me a single box of  Remington .25 auto, she can pick it up, ring up the sale, and I’m out the door. Sweeet. I’m loving my Wally World all ready.

Cracked

I crack myself up sometimes. I said this to a friend during a phone conversation:

“Let me get this straight. Obama’s health care plan will be written by a committee whose Chairman says he doesn’t understand it, passed by a Congress which hasn’t read it, signed by a President who smokes, funded by a Treasury Chief who did not pay his taxes, overseen by a Surgeon General who is obese, and financed by a country that is nearly broke. What could possibly go wrong?”

Dreaded question

Posted in Uncategorized on February 11, 2010 by Jay

The first interview with Wally World went well, so I have another, more detailed interview tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.

Every interview I do, I run into the same problem, which is the same question:

“Where do you see yourself in [insert some amount of time]?”

Like, Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I mean, for places I believe I’ll be permanent, like interviewing with the local Chief of Police, it’s easier. For Wally World though, I’m not going to be anywhere near permanent. I’ll work until the beginning of May then quit.

This should turn out to be interesting.

I doubt it passes, but it would be awesome if it did.

I have an interview tomorrow for a temp job until the police academy starts…

…at…

Wally World.

Overnight Stocker, working 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

After all my bashing of Big Box stores and Wally World, I’ll end up temporarily working for Wally World.

Go figure that…

Academy Venting

Posted in Uncategorized on February 7, 2010 by Jay

I went to Academy yesterday to see what they had for ammo and DAO pistols for the police academy (yes, I’m still agonizing over that), and happened to hear something that was appalling in more ways than one.

A gentleman in his late 30s was buying a Sig Sauer P220, and asking the salesman a bunch of questions about the process. One question he asked in particular made me perk up and pay attention. This is the question and answer:

Buyer: Will I be able to take the pistol home today?

Academy Salesman: No sir. We can’t just give you the pistol. By law, we have to wait a mandatory 3 business days before we can give it to you. It’s not a store policy, but a law we have to follow.

As soon as the salesman said that, I about fell over.

For my readers who don’t live in Texas, we don’t have a mandatory waiting period. It’s not like other states where you have to wait X number of days or weeks before you can get it. You wait as long as it takes for NCIC to do the background check, which is up to 3 business days.

And that is why I am pissed. I understand how they NCIC system works, but the salesman turned it around and made it sound like we have a mandatory waiting period here in Texas, which is deceitful. Not only that, but it may also falsely educate their customers into thinking they always have to wait 3 days, which simply isn’t true. Here in Texas, you wait until the background check is done, which could take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours to 3 days.

I sent an email to Academy explaining what happened, and will post what they reply. The auto-generated reply I got said it could take anywhere from 1-2 business days.

I swear, we need gun people working gun counters, not some random guy who doesn’t know what Full Metal Jacket means. Yes, I’m serious on the FMJ thing. I told a sales guy I wanted “a 50 round box of .40 S&W Winchester Whitebox in Full Metal Jacket”, and he looked at me like I was the stupid one. He just stood there looking at the .40 cal ammo trying to figure out what I exactly I wanted. After a minute or two, he figured out Full Metal Jacket = FMJ and gave me the correct ammunition.

Maybe it’s time I do less business with Academy…
