Ammo Shortages

Posted in Uncategorized on October 28, 2009 by Jay

Since your reading this, I will assume you enjoy shooting firearms. With that assumption, I believe you know about the ammo shortages going on. With that being understood and agreed upon….

I’ve been being a lot of .40 cal ammo when I can spare the cash. One thing I have noticed, is that the rounds I buy aren’t as “pretty” as they used to be. Even from manufacturer to manufacturer and lot to lot. I bought a box of Federal 180 grn FMJ recently, and the shell casings had little spots of discoloration, some of the bullets themselves had little nicks and stuff in the jacket. Not there long after, I bought a box of Winchester White Box .40 cal 180 grn FMJ, and it was similar. The bullets were in perfect condition, but on the bottom of the shells you could see a small ring of dirt where a machine had obviously stamped in the primer. The “Winchester” stamp on the bottom of most of the shells were kinda dirty as well, like there was a little dirt in them. Several boxes of Winchester that I’ve bought in the last couple of months have been like that.

That prompted me to look at the other boxes of ammo I have, and they are all in similar shape, from PMC Bronze to Blazer Brass to the aforementioned Federal and Winchester. One thing to note though, while the Winchester and others may be appear to be in rough shape, the bullets itself are in perfect condition, it’s just the shell casing. Now, all 3 boxes of Federal I have all sorts of little nicks in the bullets. If you would like me to show you the pictures I took, let me know in the comments and I’ll make a picture post showing examples.

Now, with the ammo I’ve bought not in perfect condition, especially the Federal, I decided to give the 3 American manufacturers of ammunition that I’ve purchased recently a call (Winchester, Federal, and Speer), to see what they had to say.

And basically, all 3 conversations were a variation on the same theme. Ammo production is running at maximum, distributors and stores are screaming for more, so something has to take a hit. One of the areas that has taken a hit is Quality Control. As the girl I talked to at Speer said, it’s not going to be as “pretty” as it once was, because of the increased rated of manufactering. I received assurances from all 3 that it would fit, feed, and function just fine, it just wouldn’t look as nice in the box.

Hey gang,

Sorry for the lack of updates. I promised one a couple nights ago, but didn’t live up to my promise, and for that, I am truly sorry. I had to move out of the apartment, and am living with my parents now. I didn’t make the PT quals to get in, so I have to wait for the next class and try again (which is in Janurary). The Girl broke up with me because of this, she wanted someone with “a future”, and she took her things and the kitten Scratch Fury, who has had his name changed to Apollo.

Sadly, she stole my 1908 VP, of which the police have been informed, but they said that there is little chance of recovering because I have no proof of ownership that makes it rightfully mine. I received it as a christmas present from my grandfather, but there is no proof that he gave it to me. There is no paper trail to link it to me, so it is pretty much gone for good.

I promise to have something worth reading tomorrow.

Still alive and kickin’. Just been way too busy for my own good. I’ll have a new post up later today. It’s something I’ve been working on for a while now.

Risk Assessment

Posted in Uncategorized on October 16, 2009 by Jay

James took a couple online quizzes, one of your risk of being the victim of a burglary, the other of being assaulted.

For the burglary quiz, I scored:

Your total is -43.

(Less than 50) This score shows a low risk of burglary. The lower your score, the lower your chances of being burglarized. It seems you take many sensible precautions. Many who score 25 or less are apartment dwellers.Steel doors helped you a lot on this test. Make sure you keep them locked.Add a perimeter alarm on your house and reap the security benefits and lower insurance costs.Workers have seen what you have and where it is located. Dry wallers and painters, non-licensed contractors and pavers are notorious for coming back when you aren’t there. Limit more exposure inside. Most are honest, but…

This question cracked me up:

Do you have a noisy or mean dog that hates strangers? I had a laughed and thought, “Does a noisy kitten count?”.

On the assault quiz, I scored:

Your total is -21.

(Negative score) A minus score indicates that the criminal would be in danger FROM YOU. The greater the negative score…the greater the danger

I think the thing that hurt me the most for the assault quiz was I don’t carry a handgun everywhere.

Ammo Situation in Cali

Posted in Uncategorized on October 16, 2009 by Jay

As many of you already probably know, A-nold of the People’s Republic of Kalifornia has signed a bill requiring registration of those who purchase handgun ammunition.

I believe that will be the next big hot button. With Heller and the current Chicago case at the Supreme Court, the Brady group will eventually realize that trying to take away the guns aren’t going to work. So, they will attack the ammunition next. Either by getting exorbitant taxes placed on ammunition or requiring those who buy ammunition to register at POS. Because technically, we are keeping our right to bear arms, since we own them, we just can’t shoot them, which is what they want. After all, their AWB (which ironically is a misleading title) didn’t do anything to ban them, and many of their other tactics aren’t working, with people such as Bob S. poking holes in their “facts” and SayUncle going after some anti-gun groups.

So, as I said earlier, I believe ammo will be the next hot button topic.

I don’t know if I’m just in an evil mood, or if it’s because I’m listening to this:

Scratch Fury: Destroyer of Worlds

Posted in Uncategorized on October 14, 2009 by Jay

Since James over at Hell in a handbasket linked (props to him!), I wanted to give an update on Scratch Fury: Destroyer of Worlds.

I took him to a local vet, where he was given all the necessary shots and a clean bill of health. The vet said that was the most imaginative name she’d ever heard, though I got it from my favorite web comic, PvP Online.

Litter box training has already begun, but he is a little slow on the uptake, much to my chagrin. I’ve discovered that oxiclean not only works wonders on my academy uniforms and regular clothes, but is handy at cleaning up the accidents left behind by Scratch.

Feeding, on the other hand, he has learned down pat. He’s not quite ready for dry food, but thats not too far away.

He sleeps a lot, and by a lot, I mean I believe I see him more sleeping than awake. One of his favorite places to sleep is at the base of my neck at the top of my shoulders. The vet said this is natural, as cats will sleep about 2/3rd of their lives, and he prefers my neck because it is a warm and comforting place to him. When he’s not sleeping on my neck, he loves to bed down in the cushions of my couch. I’m afraid one day he will bed down and I’ll sit on him.

However, when he is awake, he is always in a playful mood. However, the $50 the Girl spent on cat/kitten toys seems to have gone to waste, as he prefers playing with wadded up post it notes and receipts. He’ll bat a few around for a good 30-45 minutes, then nap for about double that, then it’s back to play time. However, like KCSteve commented in Mew!, it’s hard to physically play with him because he hasn’t quite mastered his claws yet. He’ll leave his claws out, then when your playin’ he’ll get you. Plus, the post it notes have tendency to shred  after a good play session because of his claws, which means I have to clean it up.

The Girl loves him, but was annoyed when I told her his name. Apparently, naming was something we were supposed to do together, and Scratch Fury: Destroyer of Worlds isn’t an appropriate name for a cat according to her.  I’m still not sold on the idea of having a cat, much less having to train and clean up after a kitten, but we’ll see where this goes.

I did find out why I ended up with the kitten, even though she was the one that wanted it. Her apartment complex doesn’t allow pets, but she called ahead and found that mine does. So, he is living with me now.

I’ll snap a pic of him later today.

Mew!

So the Girl showed up at my apartment an hour ago with a big bag from PetsMart and a wet kitten that looks like it got in a fight with a puddle of water and lost, told me to take care of it, and left.

Kitten is probably a few weeks old. It’s a boy. I didn’t want to take him, but the Girl said she wanted to keep it, so it ended up at my apartment (I’m serious).

I got the Kitten cleaned up, which loved the Girl’s hair dryer.

The Kitten hasn’t quite figured out my apartment yet. It’s hilarious to watch him on the linolium in the kitchen and the bathroom.

I’ve already got the perfect name for him: Scratch Fury, Destroyer of Worlds.

And I don’t even care for cats….
